through the years

on

It’s been a while since I last posted on here, and so much has happened since then.

I was reading through some of my old posts and it made me smile and laugh a little because I could feel my frustration with where I was then, and how upset I was with a lot of things that were happening and how my school life was going. Reading the posts brought back my memories of who I was and what I really wanted, and I’m so glad to have had this trip down memory lane because it makes me extra appreciative for how my life is going right now. My four years in NUS were really unhappy because I always wanted to be somewhere else, in a different school somewhere far away, and thinking back on this now really makes me smile.

What has happened since my last post in 2016?

  • I traveled to Virginia, USA twice to work a summer job as a camp counselor (in the summers of 2016 and 2017)
  • I did an internship with a well-known public relations firm that was embroiled in a colossal scandal not too long after I left (but it was a great addition to my resume)
  • I GRADUATED FROM NUS (finally)
  • I got a job in the public relations industry and worked for slightly over a year before leaving because…
  • …I got accepted into a Master’s program at the University of Southern California!

Reflecting on my old self made me smile because my six- or seven-year dream in the making came true— I’m going to become a USC Trojan!

Applying to the USC Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism was a huge leap of faith because my grades at NUS weren’t the best, my GRE scores weren’t that fantastic either because I wasn’t well-prepared, and it was tough for me to inform my boss that I wanted to continue studying while I felt like I still had the aptitude to do so. I didn’t feel like I had a great chance at entering the program because of the above factors, and could only hope for the best…

…well, was I surprised when I saw that I got accepted into both programs I applied to at USC: their Communication Management program and Strategic Public Relations program! Getting accepted into the top-ranked communications school in the world was a huge shock, and I was doubly blessed when the SPR professors wrote me to tell me that they were considering me for a scholarship. Everything worked out in the end and I’ll be going to USC in August for two years.

USC has been my dream school ever since I set foot on their campus in the winter of 2012, so receiving this piece of news pretty much made my year. I wish I had a time turner so I could go back in time and tell myself that things will work out in the end and everything will get better.

As it is now, I depart for LA in around two months and I couldn’t be more excited! I will endeavour to write more about going away and, hopefully, about LA once I get there.
